travis_smStretching my arms upward as I scan the horizon, I’m getting excited to hike into Horseshoe Canyon. I’m back at Crystal Geyser, and enjoying the view overlooking the Green River. Its early morning and the sun is dancing above the horizon and beginning to dispel the cool air that night brought to the area. Cattle are grazing on the grass just south of the geyser, and I notice the geyser has burped a few splashes onto the surrounding rock and steam has started to form. 20160512_190701Cruising on highway 95 north through Fry Canyon and Hite, the sun is setting and the landscape is pushing the last bit of color from the peaks as the darkness looms in the east. I’m hoping to cut through these last few canyons and get to a campsite, but as I keep driving I realize I’m on a scenic byway and am cutting through some beautiful country. 20160512_124351Getting back onto the hardball and heading west on highway 163, I quickly found my next adventure heading back off the road into Lower Butler Wash and searching for the Wolfman Pictograph Site. At about a mile north of highway 163 I make my way down this dirt road that is being consumed by the grasslands. At the end of the road I once again have to resort to hiking the rest of the way. 20160511_182911Heading into Canyonlands National Park from the southern entrance is pretty awe-inspiring. After turning off highway 191 and heading west there is a large expanse that separates the distant mountains. Then the plains give way to a flowering meadow and begins cutting into a canyon. Newspaper Rock is located just inside where the canyon opens and allows the cottonwoods to overtake the cut.
